Will Australia reach the T20 World Cup 2024 final?

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 is heating up with every match holding high stakes as teams aim to advance through to the semifinals. The tournament hosted in the Caribbean and the USA has been highly competitive and full of memorable moments.

Following a gruelling group stage, where 20 teams competed in four groups, eight of them made it to the Super Eight stage. There were some surprises as New Zealand, Pakistan and Sri Lanka failed to get past the first round, and the USA advanced through in their first ever T20 World Cup.

The Super Eight stage has eight teams split into two groups, with Group 1 comprising Australia, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and India while Group 2 includes West Indies, England, South Africa and the USA.

Today we focus on Australia and whether they have what it takes to reach the final. The Aussies are one-time former T20 World champions, having won the trophy in 2021. They currently hold both the World Test Championship and ODI World Cup, and the idea of holding all three ICC trophies at the same time would be enough encouragement for them.

Australia’s journey in the T20 World Cup 2024

Check out below how Australia have fared in the T20 World Cup 2024 so far.

  • vs Oman, Group B, Bridgetown – Won by 39 runs
  • vs England, Group B, Bridgetown – Won by 36 runs
  • vs Namibia, Group B, North Sound – Won by nine wickets
  • vs Scotland, Group B, Gros Islet – Won by five wickets
  • vs Bangladesh, Super Eight, Group 1, North Sound – Won by 28 runs (DLS method)

Australia have been undefeated in the ongoing T20 World Cup, winning five out of five games. They began their campaign with a 39-run victory over Oman, where Marcus Stoinis starred with the bat, scoring 67 not-out in 36 deliveries and then picking 3 for 19 with the ball. Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa and Nathan Ellis also picked two wickets each.

They faced their arch rivals and the defending champions England in the second group game, which they won by 36 runs on the back of contributions from several players. Travis Head, David Warner, Mitchell Marsh and Stoinis all made quick-fire 30s to help them post 201 on the board. Pat Cummins and Zampa then shared 4 for 51 in eight overs to hold off the opponents.

The Aussies made light work of Namibia, with Zampa picking a four-for, and Stoinis and Josh Hazlewood claiming two scalps each to skittle out the opponents for just 72. Head then smashed 34 not-out in 17 deliveries to finish the chase in 5.4 overs.

Having already qualified for Super Eight, Australia weren’t at their best against Scotland, spilling multiple catches and conceding 180. Chasing the target, they were lagging behind the required rate but Stoinis played a blistering knock of 59 in 29 balls while Tim David hit 24* off 14 to finish the game.

The Mitch Marsh-led side had a fantastic start to Super Eight as they hammered Bangladesh by 28 runs on DLS method. Cummins picked a hat-trick while Zampa bagged 2 for 24 to restrict Bangladesh to 140. In the run-chase, Head added 31 off 21 and Warner struck an unbeaten 53 off 35 to reach 100/2 in 11.2 overs before rain interrupted.

Australia upcoming fixtures

Australia vs Afghanistan

Australia will meet Afghanistan in their second Group 1 fixture in Super Eight at Arnos Vale Ground, Kingstown in St Vincent on June 23. The two teams have faced each other only once in the shorter format, which was in the previous World Cup edition, with Australia coming out on top by 4 runs.

The venue in St Vincent is known for slow and gripping pitches with significant assistance for spinners, and that won’t make Australia’s job easy against a side like Afghanistan. Having said that, Australia still boasts of a much stronger batting line-up and their bowling attack has the resources to rattle Afghanistan batters. You can bet on Australia to win at odds of 1.22 on 22Bet.

Australia vs India

Two of the best sides in the competition India and Australia will lock horns at Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, Gros Islet, St Lucia on June 24. Looking at the last five encounters, India have been victorious in four of those and Australia have won only once.

Both teams have been in terrific form in the ongoing tournament, making it pretty hard to predict this match. The Australian top order has been in great form as opposed to India, who have Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli struggling for runs. In the bowling unit, India hold a slight edge due to Jasprit Bumrah. If you wish, you can take a punt on Australia winning at odds of 2.08 on Betwinner.

Will Australia reach the final of the T20 World Cup?

Coming to the all important question of whether Australia will reach the final or not, let’s take a deeper look at their squad. Their top order is the most in-form in the competition. Travis Head scoring 179 runs at an average of 45 and strike rate of 156 while David Warner has made 169 runs at 42 average and 148 strike rate.

In the middle order, Marcus Stoinis has been superb with 156 runs at an incredible strike rate of 190, including two half centuries. Tim David has also looked in decent touch, having finished the match against Scotland. Australia will be a bigger threat once Glenn Maxwell starts firing.

Australia’s bowling department looks pretty potent as well with the pace trio of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood in good form, and Stoinis being amongst the wickets. Leg-spinner Adam Zampa has been excellent, picking 11 wickets in five innings at an economy of 5.90.

Shaky middle order, barring Stoinis, could be a big concern for Australia if the openers fall early. Destructive openers, versatile pace attack, quality spinner and in-form finishers, Australia have most of the bases covered. You can bet on Australia to reach the final of the T20 World Cup at odds of 1.79 on 20Bet.
