Chennai Super Kings (CSK) take on Gujarat Titans in game number 62 of this 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). These are two teams who’ve had contrasting runs. One team is sitting pretty at the top and the other is at the second-last spot on the points table.
This is a must-win encounter for CSK. They have four wins and seven losses from 11 games so far and they can reach a maximum of 14 points. However, if other results go their way and they manage to win all their remaining matches, there is a possibility that CSK can sneak into the playoffs. But the four-time IPL champions haven’t been up to the mark this year.
Their batting has started to fire only in the last few games as Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad have found consistency at the top and have laid the foundation with strong opening partnerships. The likes of Robin Uthappa, Ambati Rayudu and Shivam Dube made some contributions earlier in the season but it wasn’t enough. MS Dhoni’s form has been good which is a good sign for CSK. But the bowling hasn’t fired and that was always expected to be CSK’s problem this season. Deepak Chahar’s absence has hurt them big time as none of the bowlers have had a standout season.
On the other hand, GT are flying high at the moment and became the first team to qualify for the playoffs this season. They did suffer a hiccup with two successive losses but they defended 144 and won by 62 runs against Lucknow to bounce back in style. Another win might seal their spot in the top two.
GT’s batting line-up doesn’t look the best on paper but they’ve found ways to be effective. Shubman Gill has played a key role in a few wins while Wriddhiman Saha has been superb at the top, giving GT brisk starts. The likes of Hardik Pandya and David Miller have been excellent in the middle-order and Rahul Tewatia’s finishing heroics have been brilliant as well.
It is GT’s bowling that has made them stand out. Mohammed Shami has led the charge with the new-ball and he has been backed up well by Alzarri Joseph and Lockie Ferguson. Rashid Khan has shown why he is one of the best T20 bowlers. The others have chipped in nicely as well and it has been an all-round effort from the Gujarat bowling attack.

Ravindra Jadeja wasn’t fit in the last game and sat out. He is likely to slot into the CSK playing XI. Meanwhile, GT are unlikely to tinker a lot with their winning combination.
