England vs New Zealand prediction & odds
The first Test at Lord’s saw England come out triumphant by five wickets chasing the target of 277. Joe Root was the player of the match for his magnificent knock of 115* in the fourth innings. Earlier, England bowled out the visitors for 132 and in response could only manage 141 in their first innings. Daryl Mitchell’s sublime century and Tom Blundell’s 96 took New Zealand to 285.
New Zealand won the inaugural edition of the World Test Championship last year but since then have had an awful run. They have played seven Tests in this WTC cycle, winning only two and losing four games. The Black Caps have slipped to seventh position on the table with 28 points – a points win percentage of 33.33%.
New Zealand’s tour of India resulted in a 1-0 loss in December. They then had to settle for 1-1 series draw at home against both Bangladesh and South Africa earlier this year. One of the biggest reasons for their poor performance has been their inconsistent batting line-up. Kane Williamson’s form has been a major worry while Tom Latham has also been hot and cold.
Their bowling attack did fail to dismiss England in the fourth innings at Lord’s but remains a potent threat with the likes of Tim Southee, Kyle Jamieson and Trent Boult in good form. The Kiwis are likely to bolster the attack with the inclusion of work horse Neil Wagner.
England ushered into their new era under the captaincy of Ben Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum with an impressive win over the Kiwis. It should boost their morale as this was their first Test victory in the last 10 matches.
As far as the WTC is concerned, England are placed eighth with 30 points from 14 matches – a points percentage of 19.23%. Their two recent assignments were the Ashes down under and the West Indies tour, where they were hammered by 4-0 and 1-0 respectively.
At home, England remain a decent side especially with the bowling attack they have. James Anderson and Stuart Broad are in as good a shape as they’ve ever been while Matthew Potts was mighty impressive on his debut at Lord’s. The young seamer claimed seven wickets across two innings and dismissed the Kiwi captain twice.
When it comes to the batting, it’s the same old thing for England as they continue to be highly dependent on Joe Root and Ben Stokes. Their top order looks very vulnerable but the resistance shown by Ben Foakes in the last game was a positive sign.

Team News
From the English side, left arm spinner Jack Leach suffered a concussion while fielding during the first Test and was substituted by leg-spinner Matt Parkinson. Parkinson has been added to the side with Leach remaining doubtful for the second Test.
For New Zealand, Henry Nicholls missed the last game and could be available for this fixture. Nicholls should come in for Colin de Grandhomme, who has been ruled out of the series. They also made a selection error in the last Test, playing Ajaz Patel over a pacer. They might correct it by bringing in Neil Wagner.
Match Prediction
The home side England will start this game as favourites with odds of 2.00 for an outright victory. However, New Zealand are more than capable of bouncing back in style and can’t be counted out. They have odds of 2.87 to win the second Test.
Who will win the Player of the Match?
Joe Root is in magnificent form and remains the top choice for the ‘player of the match’. The veteran seamer James Anderson could also be in contention. From the New Zealand camp, Kyle Jamieson was terrific in the last game and could be a top contender.
