Will there be more Super Overs in the T20 World Cup

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 has been full of surprises, and has kept the teams and fans on edge. The tournament, which is being hosted in the United States and Caribbean since June 1st, has witnessed some thrilling action. The unpredictability of the competition is such that the teams like Pakistan and New Zealand have been eliminated in the group stage itself.

The T20 World Cup has also had two super overs, which leads us to our today’s topic of discussion. Super over is a one-over shoot-out to decide the winner after a T20 or ODI match between two teams is tied. There have been 37 tied matches in the history of T20 cricket, with the first ever tie happening in 2006. Before the invention of the super over finish, there were bowl offs. The first three tied games were decided by bowl offs, including the most famous one between India and Pakistan in the 2007 World T20.

Before further delay, let’s take a look at the previous super overs at the T20 World Cup and if there will be any more in the ongoing edition.

Sri Lanka vs New Zealand, 2012

The 2012 T20 World Cup played in Sri Lanka had witnessed two super overs just like the ongoing tournament. The first one featured the hosts and New Zealand at Pallekelle. Batting first, New Zealand posted 174 on the board with Rob Nicol scoring 58 off 40 and Martin Guptill making 38 off 30.

In response, Mahela Jayawardene struck 44 in 26 deliveries whereas Tillakaratne Dilshan smashed 76 off 53. Sri Lanka needed 44 off 32 but could not get over the line, with Tim Southee defending eight runs in the final over. James Franklin was the pick of the bowlers for New Zealand with 2 for 34 in four overs.

In the super over, Sri Lanka batted first and scored 13 runs off Southee. Lasith Malinga then conceded just seven runs to clinch the match for the home side.

New Zealand vs West Indies, 2012

New Zealand’s campaign in 2012 was frustrating as they lost all three games in the second round and were knocked out. Two of those losses were in a super over, with the second one being against West Indies at Pallekelle.

Bowling first, the Black Caps did a pretty good job to bowl out the opponents for 139 with Tim Southee picking 3 for 21 in four overs and Nathan McCullum snaring 2 for 19 in his four. Chris Gayle was the best batter for West Indies, blasting 30 off just 14.

Chasing the target, NZ kept losing wickets at regular intervals but Ross Taylor held one end and single-handedly helped them tie the score. Taylor struck an unbeaten 62 off 40 while Sunil Narine picked 3 for 20 for West Indies.

Taylor smashed a four and a six in the super over to give West Indies a target of 18 runs. Gayle and Marlon Samuels smashed a six each to win the super over.

Namibia vs Oman, 2024

You could sense the 2024 T20 World Cup will be special when Namibia and Oman produced a super over finish on the second day itself. Oman had a terrible time batting on a slow and tricky Barbados pitch, getting bowled out for just 109. Ruben Trumpelmann was the star for Namibia, picking 4 for 21 in four overs while David Wiese claimed three scalps.

Oman weren’t gonna just let Namibia cruise home as they piled pressure on the opposition batters. Mehran Khan snared 3 for 7 in three overs while Aqib Ilyas took 1 for 17 in four. Jan Frylinck scored 45 runs but couldn’t get Namibia over the line with Mehran defending five runs in the final over.

The super over turned out to be the complete contrast of the match had gone about, with Namibia smashing 21 runs in six balls. Wiese, who struck 13 off 4 in their one over, did the defending as well and conceded only 10 runs.

USA vs Pakistan, 2024

Dallas got to witness one of the craziest moments when the home side USA shocked the previous T20 World Cup’s finalists Pakistan in a super over. Babar Azam’s labouring knock of 44 in 43 balls meant that Pakistan couldn’t post a big score despite Shadab Khan hitting 40 off 25. Saurabh Netravalkar became a sensation for his spell of 2 for 17 in four overs.

The USA skipper Monank Patel registered a fifty off 38 deliveries while Andries Gous made 35 in 26 balls. Aaron Jones, who had blasted an unbeaten 94 in their tournament opener, struck 36 not-out in 26 to tie the game amidst some excellent death overs bowling by Pakistan pacers.

In the super over, Mohammad Amir couldn’t hold his nerves and conceded plenty of extras as USA posted 18 runs on the board. Netravalkar then defended the target by five runs to pull off a massive upset.

Will there be more Super Overs in the T20 World Cup?

Speaking about whether there will be more super overs in the T20 World Cup 2024, our answer would be that there is a good possibility of it happening.

The tournament has seen two super overs and the third one almost happened when Nepal and South Africa faced off at Kingstown on June 14. Batting first, the Proteas could manage 115/7 in their 20 overs with Kushal Bhurtel picking 4 for 19 for Nepal.

Tabraiz Shamsi snared 4 for 19 to keep South Africa in the game. With 1 needed on the final ball, the batter Gulshan Jha could not make the connection of bat and ball, and took off to steal a bye but he was run out at the other end.

The bowling friendly pitches in the tournament have meant that batters have had to fight for every run. Given how competitive it has been, we can’t rule out the possibility of another super over. You can bet on more than 2.5 tournament super overs at the odds of 2.65 on Parimatch.
