The FIFA World Cup 2022 is just a few months away, and now that all 32 participating teams are known and the FIFA World Cup 2022 groups have been announced, the excitement for this much-anticipated sporting event is building. Come November, the tiny Arabian peninsula will swarm with fans from across the globe to support their favourite teams. Group A
Group A comprises Senegal, Ecuador, Netherlands and Qatar. Hosts Qatar, who only ranked at no 51, will be in the FIFA World Cup 2022 Group A as customary for the hosting team. The Netherlands is ranked at no 10 and will hope to make it to the tournament’s final stages as their last visit there was eight years ago. Senegal ranks at no 20 and is known as the Kings of Africa. They fought hard to get into this pot and made it in with a penalty shootout against Egypt. Ecuador comes in at no 46. This team will have to fight hard if they want to avoid an early exit from the tournament.
Our forecast for group A
With Brazil scoring four or more goals in four of their previous five games, all odds are on Brazil for the FIFA World Cup 2022 group A. Brazil finished at the top in the CONMEBOL qualifying, with 17 unbeaten matches. Brazil has a lot to prove, though they may find playing the winners in the other groups later in the tournament a hard match.
Group B
Group B was decided after Wales defeated Ukraine in June in a World Cup qualifier played in Cardiff. England was the Pot 1 seeded team that was first drawn into Group B, and behind them was the United States from Pot 2. Initially, Iran was drawn to participate in Group A, but since there was already an Asian confederation member, was moved to Group B. Last was Wales following their victory over Ukraine.
Our forecast for group B
The favourite for Group B is undoubtedly England. This team reached the semi-finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, only losing on penalties to Italy. Currently, England is ranked fifth in the FIFA World Rankings and stands a very good chance of winning this group and possibly the FIFA World Cup. The USA, although not such a successful team as England, stands a good chance of progressing to the knockout round.
Group C
The Group C teams are made up of Argentina, Poland, Saudi Arabia and Mexico. The Argentinian side qualified after ending second in the CONMEBOL after playing Brazil to a goalless draw in San Juan. Mexico qualified through the CONCACAF Gold Cup after finishing second to Canada on goal difference. Poland received a free pass to the FIFA World Cup after Russia was expelled.
Our forecast for group C
Undoubtedly, the powerhouse of this group is Argentina, ranked fourth in the FIFA World Rankings, who will, in all probability, go on to the knockout round. However, Poland can pull one over and progress to the knockout round and could provide a nail-biting match when they play Argentina in the final group game. The Mexican side averages only one goal per game, but they rarely concede any as well, making them a tough team to beat.
Group D
France, the defending world cup holders and ranked no 3, will be pitted against Tunisia, Denmark and Australia. Tunisia ranks at no 35 and has made it to back-to-back world cups thanks to the qualifying final against Mali. Denmark, which ranks at no 11, will have all eyes on them thanks to the impressive gameplay at the Euro 2020. Australia, which is ranked at no 42, made it into the world cup by beating Peru in the FIFA intercontinental playoff.
Our forecast for group D
France, in our opinion, will dominate this group. They won the 202-2021 EUFA Nations League by beating Spain. Their team is strong and cohesive and if they play anything as they have been, they come out on top. Denmark may upset the balance if France isn’t careful. They have proved in the Euro 2020 tournament just how formidable they can be.
Group E
Spain will be joining their fierce rivals, Germany in the FIFA world cup 2022 groups round. They will be joined by intercontinental winners Costa Rica who beat New Zealand 1 -0, and the Asian Cup 2019 finalist, Japan. These round-robin games will be some of the toughest at the tournament as only two teams can advance. However, in the past Spain and Germany have claimed World Cup titles, but Japan has progressed to the knockout round three of the last five times.
Our forecast for group E
Spain and Germany are ranked fifth and seventh in the FIFA World Rankings. They are the most likely to advance to the Round of 16 knockout stages where they will be facing the winners from Group F. It is unlikely that either Japan or Cost Rica has the necessary skills to beat the two European powerhouses, but by some miracle, might pull through, however unlikely.
Group F
The teams battling it out for a spot in the knockout round feature greats such as Belgium, Croatia, Canada, and Morocco. Croatia, which was a finalist in the 2018 FIFA World Cup, will be facing off against Belgium, which reached the semifinals of the same year. Canada will be making their first appearance in a World Cup since 1986. Morocco will be representing Africa after beating DR Congo.
Our forecast for group F
Belgium and Croatia will be going through to the knockout stage in all likelihood since they are the two top-ranked teams in this group. That is not to say that Marocco and Canada should be dismissed; however unlikely it is that they will defeat the European teams.
Group G
FIFA world cup 2022 group G features one of the biggest contenders to walk away with the silverware this year. Brazil is the five-time FIFA World Cup champion side which was the first team from South America to qualify for this prestigious event. Serbia, Switzerland and Cameroon will join the Brazillian side in this group.
Our forecast for group G
The obvious favourite for winning this FIFA world cup 2022 group is Brazil. The remaining spot in the knockout stages will be highly contended by the remaining three teams. In all probability, Switzerland will be taking the second spot and pulling through to the Round of 16 alongside Brazil to face the winners of Group H.
Group H
This FIFA world cup 2022 group comprises Portugal, Ghana, Uruguay and South Korea. Portugal, who ranks at no 8, will probably have Cristiano Ronaldo play his last World Cup for the team. Ghana, which ranks at no 60, will take to the field after cementing a place in the World Cup for the first time since 2014. Ranking in at no 13 is Uruguay, who also got to the last eight in the 2018 World Cup where France pushed them out. South Korea has played in every World Cup since 1982 and ranks at no 29. This team has everything to prove and will look to make it out of the group stage for the first time since 2010.
Our forecast for group H
Both Portugal and Uruguay are strong contenders for being the leaders of this group. They have equally fought hard to be where they currently are and rightly deserve a place in the Round of 16. It will probably be Portugal and Uruguay playing against Brazil and Switzerland.
Summary – FIFA World Cup 2022 Groups and Teams
No matter which teams pull through to the knockout stages, it is sure to provide a spectacular group stage full of drama and excitement that can only be found in the FIFA World Cup. There are sure to be many upsets by teams that nobody would have thought would go on to play in the Round of 16, but this just adds to what makes football the most beautiful game.
