In match number 11 of this 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Chennai Super Kings take on Punjab Kings at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. These two sides have had contrasting starts to this IPL 2022.
CSK’s batting was a huge let down in their first game against Kolkata Knight Riders. The top-order failed big time and it was MS Dhoni’s half-century that got them to a fighting total of 131. New skipper Ravindra Jadeja also couldn’t really force the pace. The bowling seemed to lack a bit of bite but they had only 131 to defend. The defending champions will be looking to brush this aside as a one-off and aim to bounce back strongly.
On the other hand, Punjab had a wonderful start to this season under new captain Mayank Agarwal. The bowlers did concede 205 against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) but the power-packed batting line-up helped them get over the line with an over to spare. PBKS’ bowling may continue to be a bit of a concern but the inclusion of Kagiso Rabada may add some teeth to the attack. Moreover, their batting looks fiery and can outpower most teams.

MS Dhoni’s solid record against Punjab
MS Dhoni started the 2022 season with a solid half-century. The former CSK captain walked out to bat at No. 7 and resurrected the side from 61/5. He struck a 38-ball 50 in a knock that included seven fours and a six. CSK face Punjab next and his record against them is excellent. Dhoni has aggregated 607 runs at an average of 55.18 and a strike-rate of 152.89. He also has recorded five half-centuries against them.
Team News
CSK are all set to welcome back Moeen Ali into the side. The off-spinning all-rounder will infuse life into the CSK middle-order and is likely to replace Mitchell Santner. Rajvardhan Hangargekar may come in for Tushar Deshpande. On the other hand, PBKS will be bolstered by Jonny Bairstow’s arrival. The Yorkshireman will replace Bhanuka Rajapaksa. Kagiso Rabada is out of quarantine as well and he is likely to come in for Sandeep Sharma.
Match prediction
CSK may have a better head to head record but Punjab are looking like a powerful unit this time around. They seem to have most bases covered and hence, could start as slight favourites.
Who will win the Man of the Match?
Ruturaj Gaikwad failed in the first game but he was the Orange Cap winner in the 2021 season. He was supremely consistent at the top of the order and he could be a contender. Moeen Ali can have a big impact with both bat and ball and was critical to CSK’s success last year. Jonny Bairstow is a destructive player and thus, he could be a strong contender. Shikhar Dhawan has been very consistent in the IPL over the last few years and he has been racking up the big scores regularly.
