We are past the halfway mark of the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the battle is heating up at the top and middle of the points table. Two in-form teams Gujarat Titans (GT) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) collide in match number 40. Both these teams have momentum behind them.
GT are sitting at the top of the points table. They’ve lost just one game which was against SRH. Apart from that, they have found different players stepping up at different junctures. Their bowling attack is solid and the likes of Mohammed Shami, Lockie Ferguson and Rashid Khan have shared the spoils between them. Hardik Pandya’s all-round exploits have been superb while David Miller single-handedly won them a game. Shubman Gill’s couple of half-centuries set them up in the earlier matches. On the other hand, SRH started with two successive losses and it seemed like things were going down the barrel once again, like it did in 2021. However, they have turned it around beautifully. They have been lucky with the toss and have chased in every game but they have upped their game in all three departments. Rahul Tripathi, Aiden Markram, Abhishek Sharma and Kane Williamson have been good with the bat while the pace attack has been superb. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, T Natarajan, Marco Jansen and Umran Malik have been excellent and have delivered more often than not.

Gujarat Titans’ contrasting returns in the powerplay with bat and ball
Gujarat Titans’ top-order has been a bit of concern. Shubman Gill got big runs in the first few games and his form has tapered off as well in the last few matches. Apart from him, none of the top-order batters have got runs consistently. The likes of Matthew Wade, B Sai Sudharsan, Vijay Shankar haven’t really got going and the powerplay hasn’t been effective enough with the bat for GT.
However, they have been quite good with the ball. Their powerplay economy rate of 8.36 is the second-best for any team this season so far. They have also taken nearly two wickets in a game on an average. Lockie Ferguson, Mohammed Shami and Hardik Pandya have stepped up really well.

Hardik Pandya missed the game against CSK due to a groin niggle but he is expected to be back as the rest was mainly precautionary. The rest of the line-up is most probably going to remain the same. Meanwhile, SRH are unlikely to tinker with their combination too much as well.

Both teams are in top form and it seems like even stevens ahead of the clash. GT might be slightly ahead given their rockling start and have the winning odds of 1.55. Meanwhile, SRH have the odds of 1.67 to win the game.
Who will win the Man of the Match?
Hardik Pandya is in excellent form and he has been consistent with both bat and ball. The GT skipper has scored 228 runs at a strike-rate of 136.52 and has taken four wickets at an economy of 7.56. He could be a strong contender to win the player of the match. Rashid Khan is always one of the big contenders. Meanwhile, Rahul Tripathi might be a solid option too (205 runs at an average of 51.25 and a strike-rate of 173.72). T Natarajan’s consistency with the ball makes him a good pick as well.
